Description

Bleasdale Studio was appointed to explore extension opportunities for a compact end-of-terrace cottage located within the Bowdon Conservation Area in Altrincham. The brief focused on enlarging the ground floor living and kitchen spaces by making strategic use of an underutilised rear yard, while working within the constraints of permitted development rights.

Extensive planning research was undertaken to ensure the proposal remained sensitive to the heritage context and aligned with the conservation guidance specific to Bowdon. The site presented a number of complexities, with a series of level changes stepping down from the house into the yard and again into a shared-access rear garden, which also serves as a right of way for neighbouring residents.

Working with the natural topography, we developed a compact, light-filled extension that reclaims the former yard to create a more generous kitchen and living space. A bespoke reading nook was integrated to make use of the level shifts, turning a once-challenging layout into a distinctive feature and enhancing the character and function of the home.
